What shall I wear?
No special clothes are required. You may be more comfortable removing your shoes especially for some practices if you wish to.
You may like to bring a shawl, wrap or small blanket for keeping you warm and cozy while sitting, but cushions and wraps will be available.

What can I bring?
Some people like to bring a cushion or bolster that enables them to sit most comfortably in a chair.
Feel free to bring your water bottle. Water and black teas are available during the session.
A note book and pen will be useful if you like to take notes but handouts will be given.

Is it yoga?
It is not yoga. It does, very occasionally, include simple movement like slow walking and stretching while sitting in a chair and lying on the floor if you choose.
All movements are done without the aim of achieving any particular position and are entirely non-competitive.
They are done in whatever range is appropriate for you and can be adapted to suit whatever is comfortable at the time.
Mindfulness owes much to the traditions of yoga and its approach is highly compatible with the philosophies and the
deep and careful movements of most yoga styles.

Is it group therapy?
We usually sit in a group semi circle of chairs for the session but it is not group therapy. Participants are not asked to talk about their personal problems or issues.
This is a practical skills based programme but it does involve some group and pairs sharing and discussion in relation to the skills as we learn them.
The majority of class time is required for learning and practicing the mindfulness techniques introduced each week.

Is it Buddhism or Meditation?
The word mindfulness is a modern western translation of a word from ancient Buddhist teachings. Its fundamental principles are derived from Buddhist meditation practices and many of those who teach it around the world today do have a back ground in Buddhist meditation.
However, not all teachers are Buddhists, most of the material presented is from other sources and it is not necessary to believe, practice or participate in any aspect of Buddhism to gain the full benefit of this programme.
Silent mindful sitting is a core skill in the programme and is a form of meditation. There are regular periods of silent sitting (usually in a chair, unless you prefer some other posture) during each session - but it is not necessary to sit crossed legged at any time during the course. Mindfulness techniques are highly compatible with most meditation practices.
All of the topics introduced during the programme relate to recent developments in the biological and social sciences. They include the results of scientific investigations into practices and concepts originated within Buddhist meditation and still practised by Buddhists and non-Buddhist meditators from many different traditions.
